What Bahuka tells Kansa

*Shared by Swami Mitranandaji in his talk this morning - 22nd Feb.*

*Kamsa’s Strategy: How to extinguish the hope of deliverance in People*

[An excerpt from K.M.Munshi's Krishnavatara - Book 1 of 7: The Magic Flute

Context:
Krishna is born as the eighth child of Devaki, but was switched with the girl born of Yashoda in nearby Gokul. As soon as Kamsa knows of the eighth child's birth, he rushes to the palace where Devaki & Vasudeva were imprisoned, to kill the child. He lifts the child to dash it to the ground.

... Suddenly, Kamsa felt unsure of himself. His hands began to tremble. The hand, which held the child and was raised to dash it to the ground, grew numb, and the child slipped out of his hand. A shriek followed, poignant and terrifying. The child flew out of the window!

The room swam before him. Everything grew dark. Kamsa tottered out of the room as he heard a supernatural voice saying: 'Your destroyer is elsewhere, already born.'

...
The next day Kamsa called a council of the men who were loyal to him, among whom was Pralamba, his chief adviser. Pradyota and his wife Putana were also there and there was Bahuka, the old Magadhan warrior, whom Jarasandha had sent to Mathura to look after the interests of his daughters [to whom Kamsa was married].

Kamsa told them of what had happened, of the strange shriek, of the flying child, and even of the words that he had heard: 'Your destroyer is elsewhere, already born.'

Pralamba, Kamsa's principal adviser, respectfully asked: 'Lord, have I your permission to speak the truth?'

Kamsa nodded assent.

Mighty prince, I fear the words you heard were a warning given to you by the gods,' said Pralamba. 'The people fear you and dare not speak out. But they all await the deliverer.'

'Lord, I also heard a voice. I cannot say where it came from, but it did say the words: 'Your destroyer is elsewhere, already born,' said Putana.

Kamsa thought for a little while. Then he knit his brows and said, 'I cannot leave anything to chance. Kill all the children born during the last ten days. Why, even those born within the past month. What do you say to that, venerable Bahuka?' And Kamsa turned to the old Magadhan warrior.

Then Bahuka, once the minister of Jarasandha, said slowly, 'Mighty Prince, you may kill as many children as you are able, but you will not prevent people waiting for the deliverer, and so long as they wait for deliverance, you will be in danger.'

'How can we prevent people waiting for the deliverer?' asked Kamsa.

'Lord, people are cowards. They will accept you as the master if you treat them with great hardness. But you will not break their spirit so long as they hope that a deliverer will come,' replied Bahuka.

'How can I avoid their thinking of a deliverer?' 'My master,' said Bahuka, 'their hopes are kept alive by the sages and ascetics and by Brahmans who talk of dharma.'

'You are right. Whatever I do, they call adharma. Bahuka, you are wise. You have been trained under our glorious father-in-law, Jarasandha. You must have had sufficient experience. Let us know what we can do.'

'Lord, the first duty of a powerful ruler is to extinguish the hope of deliverance in his people. This hope, as I said, is kept alive, first, by the ascetics.'

'How shall I deal with them?'

'Mighty Prince, you cannot deal with them easily. They do not covet, nor fear, nor hate. They want nothing for themselves. That is why they are so powerful. But that is not all. There are Brahmans, the men of self-discipline, who have faith in the Sacred Word - the Vedas - and who invoke the gods and teach dharma as something above the might of kings. They will not accept your dictates cheerfully. They judge everyone by the canons of what they call dharma.'

'I have been trying to win them over by lavish grants,' said Kamsa.

'You cannot bribe the sages; nothing will corrupt them. And if you give grants to the Brahmans, I know, they will fatten on them. But in their hearts the thirst for knowledge will remain and they will only take the advice of those who refuse to live in riches.'

'I can kill them surely.'

'Mighty Prince, if you kill them, the people will turn in wrath against you. If you drive them away from Mathura, they will raise enemies for you wherever they go.'

Kamsa listened to Bahuka's words in silence and the old minister continued:

'Mighty Prince, there is only one way to destroy the sages and the Brahmans. Open your purse-strings to the people; teach them to eat, drink and enjoy themselves; break up their families; teach women that chastity is not worth having at the cost of pleasure; bring up children to look upon their parents as old and useless. Once the people begin to believe in unrestrained pleasures as the goal of life, they will look upon the ascetics as deranged and the Brahmans as selfish; they will laugh at those who talk of duty, tapas, love and compassion. When wine flows, self-restraint will disappear; men will be like well-fed cattle at the mercy of their cowherds. Whatever you do they will bear as patiently as uncomplaining beasts, and obey your lash as if it were a favour from you.'

'That is a long path to follow that you have shown us, Bahuka. We shall try to follow it. In the meantime, Putana, find out how many children were born during the last few days and see that none of them survives.'

NMN Springboard……….

 NMN Springboard……….

We all have been hoping wholeheartedly to avail unlimited talks by Mr. Narendra Naidu. We very well know his wide range of oratorship. He puts forth the heart wrenching story of Baba Amte as efficiently as he simplifies the complexity of Developmental Biology! He can trigger youngsters through his talks on Swami Vivekananda and also talk on Genetics for hours!
NMN is now starting a series of kaleidoscopic talks both live and online. He will be covering various topics like Swami Vivekananda, Cultural heritage of India, Genetics, Swami Chinmayananda, Personality development, Baba Amte, Developmental Biology, Charlie Chaplin and many more.

You are welcome to attend all his live sessions twice a month at A-16, Ruston colony, Bijalinagar road, Chinchwad, Pune. Those who want to attend online can join us on web-call. We will be intimating you in advance about the scheduled talks and the meeting link.

We are starting with the series: 'Discovering Vivekananda' from Thursday, 12th January 2023 on the auspicious occasion of Swami Vivekananda Jayanti.

****************************************

As NMN is the magnet which holds on to the public irrespective of their age group, gender, vocation and field of interest his well-wishers and fan followers have been requesting him to start his own YouTube Channel. His simplicity of staying away from limelight wasn't pushing him ahead. But now that this global online platform has become strong and inevitable he has decided to go ahead with the intention of reaching out to people beyond boundaries....BUT....on one condition....He has insisted on having live sessions at A-16 (his home) which we can later publish on YouTube. As we all know he loves to have a live audience.
Isn't it a JACKPOT for all of us!?

* We will be starting 'NMN Springboard' YouTube channel only after we complete video shooting of ample sessions. *

If you are interested to get notifications of these sessions starting from 12th January you are invited to join the 'NMN Springboard' WhatsApp group. This group will allow only admins to share updates. If you have any queries you may contact the admins.

Why should I be part of 'your' revolution?

The hero of the movie 'Buddha In A Traffic Jam' asks this question to the teacher (Anupam Kher) this question - Why should I be part of 'your' revolution?

So true it is! Without our knowledge, people show us some aim and after some time, they start telling us how it is our idea and our aim! It is ok if it happens organically and if we really start liking the aim but what if we do not like the aim?

One might follow certain aims for a variety of reasons! Like for money, for lack of other options, in helplessness, for proximity of the location from home, for friendship, out of respect, because one does not know how to say no... so on and so forth! So there are many reasons for keeping some aims. But it does not mean that after keeping the aim for sometime, everyone will forget their real aim and will continue doing what they were doing! The first opportunity one will get, they will fly away from the boring, non interesting, harmful, damaging, dangerous, illegal, immoral and degrading aims!

When we have to achieve something, we have to forget the differences and so teacher, student and aim should be one! Students should become one with an aim like Arjuna was not able to see anything else but the eye of the fish, teacher and aim does not remain different so achieving aim is following teacher and in the process the student himself becomes teacher. In this way all 3 become one - aim, teacher and student. But when the aim is not noble, the student should be intelligent enough to separate the boundaries of the teacher, himself and the aim! When a student can do that, he can ask this question - Why should I be part of 'your' revolution?

Asking such questions can be considered as wrong in Indian culture but when teacher is like character of Anupam Kher in Buddha In A Traffic Jam, know that the time has come to ask these questions at least when a student finds the aims shown by the teacher are illogical, immoral, dangerous, degrading etc.

It is such a beautiful and daring question! The Earliest meaning of word romance was 'daring' I remember Dr. Abhay Bang mentioned in one of his lectures. So in that sense this question is not only beautiful but also romantic - Why should I be part of 'your' revolution?

Number of calories per 100 grams of different food items (cooked)

Dear All,

Greetings!

The information about number of calories in isolated food items is available easily on internet. So it is not duplication of that information. However, I did not find number of calories of cooked food items easily on internet. So below I am creating a list of number of calories per 100 grams of different food items when they are cooked. This helps in getting the information readily available and based on this one can decide if they should eat a particular item or not and if yes in what quantity so that the daily calorie limit will not exceed. This is just compilation of information from different sources on internet hence there is possibility of errors in it. If you find any major error in it, please let me know. Primarily, I have created this list for my own reference and not some research purpose hence there is possibility of some minimal error in this list but that is acceptable to me. Though the list if for my own personal purpose, others reading this blog can definitely use this list if they find it useful.

Available treatments for COVID-19

Dear All,

Greetings!

It is a blog post of loud thinking. I want to remind myself that treatment (drugs) are available for the COVID-19. Analyzing the evidence of the drugs is not an easy job and the field of clinical research is created for testing of the drugs and analyzing its evidence. It is so difficult job and I do not claim that I am an expert in it but I am a medical doctor who is trained and has experience of working in the field of clinical research. So I will share whatever I know about drugs briefly below. I accept that I maybe wrong in which case I stand corrected. Kindly feel free to let me know (only if you have more qualifications than me in the field) if any corrections are needed in the information below. I wish to give information in tabular form. I have no financial gain while giving this information and the only reason I am giving this information is I want to reduce fear in the minds of patients. Because the confidence that some drugs are available helps in reducing fear.

The evidence present is according my opinion based on my understanding at this time.

Name of the drug  (Evidence)

  1. Steroids -Dexamethasone and Prednisolone (Very strong)
  2. Vitamin D (Very strong)
  3. Aspirin (Very strong)
  4. Vitamin C (Strong)
  5. Remdesevir (Good)
  6. Favipiravir (Good)
  7. Hydroxychloroquine (Weak)
  8. Vitamin B12 (Weak)

It is needless to say that do not take any of these medicines on your own unless and until some doctor will prescribe it to you. I do not take any responsibility of any side effects (or missing of opportunities of giving other drugs) arising out of use of any of the drugs above. However, you can discuss the evidence about these drugs with your doctor. Feel free to ask to your doctor if any of the drugs mentioned above are needed in your particular case. These are kind of pointers / leads to study more about it. I am not making any claim here that I have found something new. I have seen these drugs being used to treat patients.

Thanks Dr. Nachiket Potdar for telling the correction that some of the above mentioned drugs are for the treatment of virus and some of the drugs are treatment of complications and also some are used prophylactically.

Thank you.

First part

Second part

Do not hesitate to call me for any doubt regarding COVID-19

Dear All, because of COVID-19, many things are happening around so I am writing this post. I want to share with you all that kindly do not hesitate to call me (and any healthcare professional in fact) if any information is required. I do not know how much information I can give but I will share whatever I know. One feels hesitant sometimes about how to call and why to trouble but please note that it is no trouble for me and it is happiness in fact. If I will not be able to respond to your queries on phone, surely I will try to respond in messages out of office hours. Calling some health professional when in need is a natural thing we all do so there is no need to share this but sharing it explicitly because I know many people hesitate. Thank you.
