Available treatments for COVID-19

Dear All,

Greetings!

It is a blog post of loud thinking. I want to remind myself that treatment (drugs) are available for the COVID-19. Analyzing the evidence of the drugs is not an easy job and the field of clinical research is created for testing of the drugs and analyzing its evidence. It is so difficult job and I do not claim that I am an expert in it but I am a medical doctor who is trained and has experience of working in the field of clinical research. So I will share whatever I know about drugs briefly below. I accept that I maybe wrong in which case I stand corrected. Kindly feel free to let me know (only if you have more qualifications than me in the field) if any corrections are needed in the information below. I wish to give information in tabular form. I have no financial gain while giving this information and the only reason I am giving this information is I want to reduce fear in the minds of patients. Because the confidence that some drugs are available helps in reducing fear.

The evidence present is according my opinion based on my understanding at this time.

Name of the drug  (Evidence)

  1. Steroids -Dexamethasone and Prednisolone (Very strong)
  2. Vitamin D (Very strong)
  3. Aspirin (Very strong)
  4. Vitamin C (Strong)
  5. Remdesevir (Good)
  6. Favipiravir (Good)
  7. Hydroxychloroquine (Weak)
  8. Vitamin B12 (Weak)

It is needless to say that do not take any of these medicines on your own unless and until some doctor will prescribe it to you. I do not take any responsibility of any side effects (or missing of opportunities of giving other drugs) arising out of use of any of the drugs above. However, you can discuss the evidence about these drugs with your doctor. Feel free to ask to your doctor if any of the drugs mentioned above are needed in your particular case. These are kind of pointers / leads to study more about it. I am not making any claim here that I have found something new. I have seen these drugs being used to treat patients.

Thanks Dr. Nachiket Potdar for telling the correction that some of the above mentioned drugs are for the treatment of virus and some of the drugs are treatment of complications and also some are used prophylactically.

Thank you.

- Dr. Abhijeet Safai (5 October 2020)
